The International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development (ICSID) at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia, invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the fields of institutional economics and comparative politics, with a special focus on the comparative political economy of Russia and China.

While economic transition has taken very different paths in Russia and China, both countries have preserved a range of common legacies from their Communist past that make a comparative analysis worthwhile. Currently, a team of researchers at ICSID is studying the incentives for regional officials in both countries to stimulate economic growth and achieve other desired policy outcomes. While the project is still in its early stages, systematic data collection on regional officials in both countries as well as a certain amount of fieldwork are planned to permit both a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the topic. ICSID is looking for a post-doc fellow who would be willing to participate in this research effort. Prior work experience on the topic as well as knowledge of Russian and/or Chinese is an asset, but not necessarily required.

The job involves:

• working under the direct supervision of Andrey Yakovlev, director of ICSID (ayakovlev@hse.ru)
• successful candidates are encouraged to pursue their own research in parallel with ongoing research at ICSID
• writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals in co-authorship with researchers at ICSID
• some teaching as well as one or two public presentations of the candidate’s own research are also encouraged
• participation in organization of events and other contributions to the development of ICSID

Requirements:

• a PhD from an international research university in Economics or Political science
• ability to work in a team
• fluent English
• knowledge of Russian and/or Chinese is an asset, but is not required
