International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences

Postdoctoral research positions. Deadline: April 1, 2015

The International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences at the National Research University – Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the history of World War II. Successful candidates will be expected to conduct research on one or several of the following topics: social and cultural history of WWII, history of wartime Stalinism, history of forced migrations during and after WWII, the Holocaust in the Soviet Union and other major forms of war-time violence, comparative history of German occupation regimes and collaborationist governments, policies and experiences of liberation and re-Sovietization. Other related topics as well as topics dealing with Soviet history more broadly may be also considered. The Center particularly welcomes applications from researchers who can contribute to the Center’s ongoing project Occupations and Liberations in Europe, 1939-45. 

The position involves:

  • conducting scholarly research on WWII-related topics in close collaboration with Oleg Budnitskii, the Center’s Director and Michael David-Fox, the Academic advisor at the International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences;
  • preparing and publishing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals;
  • delivering two presentations based on the candidate’s research for HSE scholars, students, or a broader audience;
  • providing consultations on writing scholarly papers in English to Russian colleagues and students;
  • some teaching is encouraged;
  • participating in the organization of scholarly events and other related activities of the Center.

HSE is offering a competitive salary and a research budget. The fellowships will normally last from September 1, 2015 until the end of August 2016.

Requirements:

  • a PhD in History from an international research university;
  • publication record in English or potential for producing high-quality research publications;
  • fluency in English.
